A singular life, a shock in the soul

Today I find myself deeply moved, to the point that my perspective on life has taken a turn. The person responsible for this emotional shock is a documentary that, at first glance, might seem to be simply about a person and their favorite video game. However, as with everything in life, context is everything.

This documentary, titled "The singular life of Ibelin", presents us in its first part with Mats, a young Norwegian who fights against a terminal illness that deteriorates his body day after day, year after year. We are shown a person who, due to his condition, lives in a certain isolation, finding refuge in the world of video games. This first part is already painful for me, it leads me to put myself in their place and feel their reality.

Through family recordings, we learn about his life until the moment of his departure. His parents, knowing that Mats kept a blog where he recorded his experiences, and that he had even left them his password, decides to write a farewell entry, a gesture of love and memory, without expecting anyone to read it. To his surprise, this action triggers a flood of emails from people expressing how important Mats was to them. It is then that his parents discover an unknown side of their son. He, in his own way, had lived intensely. His life was not limited to a computer and a game; He had touched the lives of many people.

This documentary has given me a different perspective, a lump in my throat, yes, but also a deep reflection on contexts that were foreign to me. Today I feel a great interest in experiencing that video game, in contributing to the lives of people who face similar situations. But what has moved me most is the awareness of being alive, of not being trapped in my body, and that, despite adversity, we can leave our mark. The emotion has been so intense that I felt the need to write it immediately. It's been a long time since something excited me this way, and I think it's worth sharing.

I invite you to watch this documentary. It will make them reflect on how to be better people and take advantage of the opportunities we have. And it will show them that, sometimes, video games can transcend what we imagine.

Thanks for reading.
