A Minimalist Pen Inspired by the Samurai Tradition
July 2022
The search for functionality and aesthetics in a single object
As a designer, I am always looking for simple solutions to everyday problems. On this occasion, the need to have an organized place for my pencils led me to create a pen holder that combines functionality and aesthetics in a unique way.
The inspiration: the Japanese katana
The first sketches were the result of a search for inspiration in everyday objects. It was by looking at the katana stands that I found the key to my design. The simplicity, functionality and elegance of these holders inspired me to create a pen holder that followed the same principles.
The design and manufacturing process
Using the open source 3D design software Blender, I modeled the pen taking several factors into account:
- Center of Gravity: To ensure stability, the center of gravity was located at the bottom of the stand.
- Simple Assembly: The design allows for quick and easy assembly without the need for special tools.
- Without supports: To optimize the printing process and obtain a clean and aesthetic piece.
- Resistance: The PLA+ material used guarantees the durability of the support, even under the weight of the pencils.
A design that combines tradition and modernity
This pen is an example of how inspiration can emerge from the most unexpected sources. By combining the minimalist aesthetics of katana stands with 3D printing technology, I have created a functional and elegant object that accompanies me in my daily life.
