Gas Extractor for 3D Printers
August 2022
3D printing is an exciting technology that allows us to bring our ideas to life. However, a common drawback of this process is the emission of gases and fine particles that can be harmful to our health. To solve this problem, many makers turn to building their own custom smoke extractors. In this note, I'll show you how I designed and built mine, step by step.
The problem and the solution
Like many of you, I realized that constant exposure to the gases emitted by my 3D printer could affect my health. Commercial extractors, although effective, did not suit my needs and were often too large and noisy. I needed a more personalized and efficient solution.
After doing some research, I decided to build my own exhaust fan. The idea was to create a compact, quiet system that could effectively remove gases without interfering with the printing process.
Design and materials
The heart of my extractor is a regular computer fan. Its compact size and low noise level made it ideal for this application. Additionally, I used a PVC reducer to connect the fan to an outlet pipe.
To design the custom parts, I used Blender 3D design software. I printed the parts on my Ender 3V2 using PLA, a material with sufficient resistance and is easy to print.
Construction process
- Design and manufacturing of the parts: I modeled in Blender and printed the parts. The support between the fan to the reduction, and the outlet cover.
- Assembly: I joined all the pieces using screws and glue. It was important to ensure a tight connection to prevent air leaks.
- Installation: I drilled a hole in the wall to install the exhaust fan and secured it firmly.
- Electrical Connections: I connected the fan to a power source and controlled it using a smart plug.
Tests and adjustments
Once installed, I performed several tests to adjust the position of the extractor. Thanks to these tests, I was able to optimize the air flow and ensure efficient gas extraction.
Results
The end result was a custom, quiet and efficient exhaust fan. Thanks to this project, I can 3D print in a clean and healthy environment.
